Not all face oils are created equal – how to find the right oil for you.

Face oils have never been a trend for Skin Juice. They’ve been part of our philosophy since the very beginning.

When we launched in 1996, we introduced one of our first face oils as a deliberate alternative to traditional night creams. While night creams often rely on emulsifiers and occlusive textures, we took a different approach: supporting the skin’s natural overnight repair with lipid-rich nourishment that works with the skin, not smothering it.

Today, face oils are everywhere. But not all oils are created with the same level of integrity, compatibility or performance.

If you’re choosing a face oil, here’s what matters.

Biocompatibility: Working with the Skin, Not Against It

Your skin barrier is made up of lipids. These fatty substances regulate hydration, protect against environmental stress, and maintain overall skin function.

Biocompatible plant oils closely mimic these natural lipids. This allows them to integrate into the skin’s intercellular matrix, supporting barrier repair, improving moisture retention and helping to regulate sebum production.

By contrast, synthetic or mineral oils tend to sit on the surface. While they can create a temporary softening effect, they do not actively contribute to skin function and in some cases may contribute to congestion or imbalance.

What to look for:

  • Cold-pressed, plant-based oils
  • Lipid profiles rich in essential fatty acids (Omega 3, 6, 9)
  • Free from mineral oils and synthetic fillers or fragrances

Potency: More Than Just a Single Oil

The skin’s intercellular pathways are lipid-based transport channels, facilitating the movement of compatible, oil-soluble ingredients within the outer layer of the skin.

Many face oils on the market rely on one or two hero ingredients, such as rosehip or jojoba. While beneficial, these alone offer a limited nutrient profile. And the skin requires a broad spectrum of nutrients to function optimally.

A well-formulated face oil should deliver a diverse blend of oil-soluble actives, including:

  • Essential fatty acids to reinforce barrier integrity (look for ingredients such as sea buckthorn and macadamia oil)
  • Antioxidants to help neutralise free radicals and reduce oxidative stress (berry oils are a great source)
  • Vitamin-rich oils (such as broccoli or tomato) to support skin renewal and brightness
  • Oil-soluble actives such as commipheroline or marine extracts like padina pavonica to support collagen production and improve skin density
  • Anti-inflammatory compounds such as turmeric and bisabolol to help calm irritation and reduce redness

Molecular Diversity: Depth and Surface Support

Not all oils behave the same on the skin. Their molecular structure determines how they absorb and where they work.

  • Smaller molecular oils such as camellia can penetrate more deeply, delivering nutrients that support cellular function and regeneration.
  • Larger molecular oils such as macadamia tend to remain in the upper layers, reinforcing the skin barrier and reducing transepidermal water loss.

A balanced oil blend includes both, delivering nourishment across multiple levels of the skin.

Why Use Face Oil at Night?

At night, the skin shifts into repair mode. Cell turnover increases, circulation improves, and the barrier begins to rebuild after daily environmental exposure.

Applying a face oil at this time provides lipid-based nourishment that aligns with these natural processes.

Unlike heavier occlusive creams, a well-formulated oil allows the skin to function without restriction while still delivering essential nutrients. This supports nourishment and repair without disrupting the skin’s natural rhythm.

The Bottom Line

Face oils can be one of the most effective ways to support skin health.

Look for oils that are biocompatible, nutrient-dense, molecularly diverse, and designed to support skin function rather than simply altering surface feel.

Because when it comes to skin, it is not just about adding oil. It is about choosing the right one to work with your skin.
